AIPAC- the biggest influence on US politics?

Why are the US midterm elections so important?

With US mid-term elections coming up in November, political campaigns have already begun to elect new senators to Congress. Now, at a glance, these elections don’t seem important to everyone outside the US. But it really is, as these elections can determine the US’s foreign policy, (aka a country’s plans on how they deal with other countries) where major funding and military help can easily change when there is a new senator in Congress, these elections are also very important to the US’s partners– NATO allies, Taiwan, Ukraine, Israel, South Korea and Japan, as one debate in Washington’s Congress can change military placements in Europe or Asia, if there is a funding problem, financial aid can be delayed to help countries in need. So, in short, yes, this is a big deal.

What is AIPAC?

Many lobbying groups inside the US are also affected by the outcome of these November elections, one of them being AIPAC– the American-Israel Public Affairs Committee, a powerful lobbying group in the US that advocates for pro-Israel policies, including but not limited to: unconditional military aid to Israel, restrictions and/or boycotts of companies that boycott Israel, which arguably violates the First Amendment. AIPAC has close ties with both the Republican and Democratic parties, although it has been a major target of criticism from some Democrats since Barack Obama’s presidency (2009-17). This criticism was strengthened in 2023, as some Democrats criticized the extreme military response from Israel, including but not limited to attacks on civilian populations and destruction of infrastructure in Gaza.

AIPAC’s influence on the US mid-term elections

This year, AIPAC has spent a record of over $100 million in political spending in the 2026 elections for the purpose of funding expensive campaigns and silencing candidates that oppose Israel. AIPAC trackers show that over $40 million has been spent to support candidates that share Israel’s ideals. One key representative, known as Haley Stevens, has been funded over $30 million for the Michigan Senate Primary against progressive public health and former state official Abdul El-Sayed. This race was marked as AIPAC’s largest single-race investment. Yet, despite the large investment, Abdul El-Sayed won 48.5% of the vote, while Haley Stevens received 47.5% of the vote. Which really brings the question: What is AIPAC’s reaction to this result? And how does this affect their spending in November?
